When you imagine your high school experience, what comes to mind? For some it’s the opportunity to play football under the bright lights on a Friday night, for others it is the chance to spend multiple hours a day in the visual arts department, creating various forms of music, or discovering a variety of mediums that will result in a masterpiece.
Still for others, the mere thought of high school results in feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and trepidation. . .Will I fit in? Will I find my friendship group? Will I be able to discover success in the classroom? Who will I sit with at lunch?
High school is a time of self-discovery, the chance for each student to discover his or her passion in the classroom and beyond. More and more in this ever-changing fast-paced world, high school has become a launching pad for once collegiate and career opportunities. As we “Rethink High School,“ we are challenged to create an environment that provides each individual with the platform, resources and personalized setting to adequately prepare for a future that includes both current professional pathways, as well as positions and assignments yet to be discovered.
Denver School of Innovation and Sustainable Design (DSISD) offers students a unique high school experience by highlighting the individual strengths and focusing on one’s interests in the classroom and beyond. Through internships, a multi-year mentorship program, a myriad of co-curricular activities and the chance to experience the professional setting firsthand, students spend their 4-year career participating in both the traditional academic setting enhanced by other environments that promote curiosity, questioning and critical thinking. DSISD presents a personalized journey for each learner, with a low student to staff ratio ensuring students have continuous and meaningful connections with adults throughout the process. Instead of attending school daily for 6-7 hours in the classroom, students spend time learning in a variety of settings.
